Out of the 35 certified traditional weaving styles in Japan, Tokyo prides in 3 weaving styles, Tama-ori, Murayama Oshima Tsumugi, and Honba Kihachijyo.
The town of Hachioji, located in the suburbs of Tokyo, is the center of weaving history in Tokyo and has kept the tradition of Tama-ori weaving alive.
It is an interesting time for the traditional weaving industry, as Japanese people no longer wear kimonos regularly. Therefore, many artists are currently challenging themselves to utilize their techniques in new ways, designing new artwork and fashion goods.
ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE
We invite you to a traditional atelier, with a history of over 100 years, to meet a government certified traditional artist. He will be our host to tour the atelier and teach us how to weave in the traditional way. A well known artisan, he collaborates with iconic Japanese designer fashion brands, such as Issei Miyake and Comme des Garçon. He also produces their original design products, which have been featured on the cover of the MoMA art collection and other magazines.
