Experience Kiriko glass cutting, one of Japan's most celebrated artistic traditions
Originating in the final years of the Edo period, Edo Kiriko glass-cutting is Tokyo’s signature traditional craft. Initially inspired by Western glass techniques, it evolved into something uniquely Japanese, distinguished by delicate traditional patterns, paper-thin glass, and an unmatched mastery of craftsmanship.
Today, Edo Kiriko is not only admired for its aesthetics but also serves as a symbol of refined hospitality—frequently offered as a diplomatic gift from Japan’s prime ministers and royalty.
Today, no other form of cut glass captures both intricacy and grace with such elegance and is regarded as the most refined and intricate glassmaking technique in the world. Creating just one flawless Edo Kiriko piece demands years of discipline, exacting technique, and intuitive artistry—skills passed down through generations of master artisans.
About The Experience
Enter the intimate Tokyo studio of the Kobayashi family, where the Edo Kiriko tradition has been carried through four generations. Here, you will be guided by Mr. Kobayashi, a highly decorated artisan and leading figure in Japan’s glass arts community. His father, a celebrated “Master Contemporary Craftsman,” helped elevate Edo Kiriko into a globally recognized treasure.
Observe the meticulous cutting process up close, then craft your own original glass piece under expert instruction. More than just a workshop, this is a rare opportunity to witness living heritage and take home a luminous expression of Japan’s artisanal soul.
