Southern Japan: Kyushu Region
YUFUIN
Nestled beneath Mt. Yufu on Japan’s southernmost island of Kyushu, Yufuin is a picturesque onsen retreat with all the charms of the Japanese countryside. Though not as popular as its seaside counterpart, Beppu, this small mountain town has plenty of onsen and ryokan to enjoy, along with a number of small boutiques, cafes, and even museums along the main street. Besides being home to several public baths, Yufuin is also famous for Lake Kinrinko, which is located at the end of the town’s main street and whose shores are dotted with its own selection of onsen and shops. Though not as well-trafficked, Yufuin has a number of shrines and temples that visitors can enjoy without the stress of the crowds.
FUKUOKA
Fukuoka is a sizable, modern city, making it an ideal destination for first-time visitors to Japan. Compared to other cities, it is easy to move around, as the city connects you with most of the popular sightseeing destinations, and has a unique, down-to-earth atmosphere to relieve you of all the stress from traveling. Fukuoka is the go-to place for "yatai," or open air food stands. Enjoy the outdoors while munching on various foods, such as yakitori, oden, and their famous Hakata Ramen. Drink and mingle with locals and truly immerse yourself in Japanese culture.
